Portugal is a country defined by the Atlantic, a coastal nation with a remarkable legacy of exploration. For centuries, Portuguese sailors ventured far beyond Europe, reaching Africa, Asia, India, and the Americas, shaping global trade routes and leaving a cultural influence that remains visible today, from its traditions to its widely spoken language.
Portugal’s roots run even deeper. Established as a kingdom in 1139, it emerged from a land once home to Romans, Visigoths, and Moorish civilizations, creating a rich blend of heritage that still shapes the country’s identity. To travel on foot through Portugal is to experience a place where history and modern life coexist; where medieval monasteries and whitewashed villages stand alongside contemporary design, art, and a lively creative culture.
On this seven-day hiking journey, we discover some of Portugal’s most spectacular coastal scenery, starting in the green hills and storybook architecture of Sintra and finishing among the striking sea cliffs of the Algarve. We follow historic fisherman’s paths, walk across windswept headlands, explore dune landscapes and protected nature reserves, and uncover secluded beaches, traditional towns, and quiet coastal villages.
From the sweeping ocean views at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, to the dramatic bird-rich cliffs of Cabo Sardão, each day offers a unique mix of natural beauty and cultural discovery. Along the way, we enjoy regional cuisine, connect with local artisans, and relax in welcoming seaside communities such as Cascais, Vila Nova de Milfontes, and Sagres.
Every stage of the route brings something new: hiking along iconic sections of the Rota Vicentina, crossing the Mira River by ferry, and ending evenings with unforgettable sunsets over the Atlantic.
Portugal’s coast has its own rhythm: calm, soulful, and deeply authentic. This is more than a hiking tour; it’s an immersive journey through the landscapes, traditions, and enduring spirit of Portugal’s wild shoreline.

Our journey begins in Lisbon, where the group gathers before we set out toward the legendary hills of Sintra. Just beyond the city, the landscape transforms into a world of deep forests, misty ridgelines, and romantic architecture. Tucked within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Sintra has inspired poets, artists, and royalty for centuries, its atmosphere steeped in myth and wonder.
We begin our first hike with an ascent to the Peninha Sanctuary, dramatically perched high above the Atlantic. This windswept hermitage, clinging to the cliffs, feels like a place suspended between worlds. From its terraces, sweeping views open over the coastline, the endless ocean stretching westward toward the horizon.
From here, our trail winds gradually downhill through fragrant pine forests and open heathland, revealing a stunning mosaic of landscapes. The route leads us toward the vast shoreline of Guincho Beach, where powerful Atlantic waves crash against the sand in a scene of raw coastal beauty. We continue across the rolling Cresmina Dunes, sculpted by wind and tide, and pause at the local nature center for a late lunch surrounded by this protected environment.
Today’s hike is a striking introduction to Portugal’s coastal character; rugged cliffs, hidden chapels, wild hills, and grand estates existing in quiet harmony, where nature and history meet at every turn.
In the evening, we arrive in Cascais, a charming seaside town once favored by Portuguese kings. Here, cobbled streets, a gentle maritime rhythm, and a delicious dinner of regional flavors welcome us into the journey ahead.
Overnight: Cascais
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Hiking distance: 10.5 km
Hiking duration: ~4 hours
We begin the morning at Praia Grande, where the Atlantic surges against towering cliffs in a scene of pure, untamed beauty. The air is sharp with salt, and the coastline feels elemental, shaped by wind, waves, and time.
From here, we set out on a spectacular coastal hike toward Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe. Along the trail, ocean breezes carry the scent of wild herbs as we traverse windswept headlands and pass quiet fishing coves tucked beneath rugged bluffs.
Reaching Cabo da Roca is a powerful moment. Standing at the edge of the continent, with nothing but open ocean stretching westward, it’s easy to imagine the centuries of explorers who once looked out from these shores toward the unknown. Below, local fishermen continue age-old traditions, casting their lines from the rocks as they have for generations.
In the afternoon, we step into an entirely different atmosphere at the Convento dos Capuchos. Hidden deep within the forest, this humble 16th-century monastery was carved directly into stone and shaded by ancient trees. Built by Franciscan monks devoted to simplicity, it remains a moving tribute to solitude, nature, and spiritual stillness.
Later, we return to Cascais, where cobbled streets, seaside cafés, and a relaxed coastal rhythm invite you to unwind at your own pace. Dinner by the harbor, or a tucked-away restaurant in the historic center.

The day begins with a gentle seaside hike from Cascais to Estoril, where morning light dances across the water and the coast slowly awakens. Soon, we leave the shoreline behind and cross the wide, glistening Tejo River, entering a quieter and more pastoral corner of Portugal.
Our first stop is Azeitão, a graceful town of tiled mansions, shaded streets, and timeless charm. Here, we visit a traditional workshop to discover the artistry of azulejos, Portugal’s iconic hand-painted tiles. Each design tells a story, reflecting centuries of craftsmanship and cultural identity.
After time to explore and enjoy lunch on your own, we continue into the Arrábida Natural Park. Limestone hills rise above vineyards and olive groves, creating a landscape both rugged and serene. Our afternoon hike follows the Rota dos Moinhos, the Windmills Path, where ancient stone mills still stand watch over the hillsides.
Along the way, we pass the haunting remains of a Copper Age settlement and take in sweeping views over the Tejo Estuary, Palmela Castle, and rolling countryside that seems to fold endlessly into the sky.
By early evening, we arrive in Vila Nova de Milfontes, a whitewashed village nestled at the mouth of the Mira River. With its riverside calm, slow rhythm of life, and excellent seafood, it is the perfect place to rest. Tonight, we gather for a cozy dinner in one of the town’s most beloved local restaurants.

Today we enter one of the most soul-stirring stretches of coastline in all of Portugal. A short ferry carries us across the pristine waters of the Mira River, where our trail reconnects with the legendary Rota Vicentina, an ancient fisherman’s route etched into the Atlantic’s edge.
As we hike south, the landscape shifts dramatically: gentle farmland gives way to wild dunes, windswept bluffs, and rugged cliffs plunging into the sea. Hidden coves and sleepy fishing ports appear along the shoreline, while the sound of crashing waves and seabirds surrounds us.
Our destination is Cabo Sardão, one of the most striking headlands on the Portuguese coast. Here, dramatic cliffs meet the full force of the Atlantic, and white storks nest improbably on the sea stacks below, one of the only places in the world where they do.
After taking in the raw beauty and drama of this place, we return to Milfontes, where the quiet flow of the Mira River and the familiar comfort of our hotel welcome us back.

This morning, we travel to Zambujeira do Mar, a picturesque village perched high above the Atlantic. From here, we begin one of the most breathtaking hikes of the journey, following a geologically dramatic stretch of Portugal’s southwest coast.
The trail leads across twisted rock formations, wildflower-covered fields, and soft cliffs sculpted by wind and sea. The ocean remains our constant companion, its presence both energizing and calming.
Our destination is Ponta em Branco, the “White Summit”, a windswept promontory offering unforgettable views over Odeceixe Beach. Here, the Seixe River curves gracefully into the sea, marking the meeting point between Alentejo and the Algarve.
We descend to the golden sands below, letting the Atlantic air wash away the day’s exertion. From here, we transfer to Sagres, a remote and storied town at the edge of Europe, where explorers once stood before the vast unknown ocean.

Milfontes → Zambujeira do Mar (29 km / 30 min) / Odeceixe → Sagres (57 km / 1h)
This morning offers a choice: take a relaxed start in Sagres and enjoy the coastal atmosphere, or join your guide for one final hike along the Algarve’s most unspoiled shoreline.
For those who hike, the trail begins directly from our hotel, following dramatic shale cliffs eastward. In spring, the path comes alive with wildflowers, and the views stretch across hidden coves, untouched bays, and a coastline that feels wonderfully remote, far from the busier resorts farther east.
Along the way, we pass small farms and fishing outposts where life remains deeply connected to land and sea, producing the fresh ingredients that define the Algarve’s rich and flavorful cuisine. Sagres remains one of the last true bastions of wild beauty in the region, a place where history, nature, and culture still thrive together.
We finish our final hike at the golden sands of Zavial Beach, where we gather for a relaxed seaside lunch before continuing our journey back to Lisbon. Check in, relax, and toast the adventure with a farewell dinner!
