The southern part of Evia is considered to be the “Land of the Giants“, home of the megalithic structures the Greeks call drakospita, or “dragon houses.” The Dragon-houses of Styra, which we will visit, are the best preserved and consist of three farmhouse type buildings, dating from Classical to Hellenistic times.
Leaving the Dragon-houses, we follow the ridge towards the Acropolis of Styra. Brethaking views of Styra and the Evian gulf will leave you speechless! Ancient quarries indicate former mining activity, while colossal ancient walls and the huge monolith gate “the emblem of the municipality of Styra” are the highlights of our tour!
While little is understood of the dragon houses, scholars are constantly boggled by the sheer size and weight of the single megalith resting on two equally large post stones, together forming a doorway. How this megalith could have been lifted and placed atop the posts is as much a mystery as the reason behind the building of these structures…
