    Tour Description

Sail, Hike, and Discover the Magic of the Ionian Sea

The Ionian Islands are renowned for their gentle sailing conditions, making them ideal for island-hopping journeys. With short distances between islands, countless hidden coves, and traditional harbors to anchor in, sailing here is not just a way to travel—it’s a way to connect with Greece’s soul. Sail through the sapphire waters of the Ionian Sea, where lush islands rise from the horizon like ancient dreams. This is a corner of Greece where mythology, nature, and authenticity meet—far from the crowds, close to the soul.

From the Venetian grace of Lefkada to the mythical homeland of Odysseus in Ithaca, this 8-day journey invites you to slow down and reconnect. Each day blends gentle sailing (no more than 4 hours) with carefully chosen hikes (2–4 hours) along olive-covered hills, stone-paved village paths, and ridge trails with endless sea views.

You’ll explore Meganissi’s timeless charm, the pine-scented serenity of Kalamos, and the poetic simplicity of Kastos, where island life unfolds as it has for generations. Along the way, dive into hidden coves, share stories over home-cooked meals, hike to monasteries and ancient ruins, and sip wine with the locals who still live by the rhythms of the sea.

This is not just a sailing trip—it’s a deep, sensory immersion into the Ionian’s natural wonders, culture, and mythical legacy. Designed for active travelers who crave both movement and meaning, this experience offers the perfect balance of adventure and ease, guided by the passionate team at Aegean Outdoors.

The region is a sanctuary for wildlife lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike. Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) glide through the waters, dolphins leap alongside sailboats, and rare birds nest in the island forests. These islands have been shaped by centuries of history—from ancient Greek settlements to Byzantine monasteries, Venetian fortresses, and stories of Odysseus himself, who was said to have wandered the very waters you can now explore.

Add to this the warmth of Ionian hospitality, the aromas of home-cooked dishes, and the rhythm of island life—and you have the perfect backdrop for a journey that restores, inspires, and delight

At Aegean Outdoors, we specialize in customized sailing and hiking adventures that immerse you in this extraordinary region. Whether you’re seeking a relaxed island-hopping cruise, a challenging trek through rugged terrain, or a bit of both, we design our tours around your pace, your passions, and your desire to experience Greece in an authentic way.

So, whether you’re dreaming of a relaxed island-hopping escape, a rewarding trek across ancient trails, or the perfect balance of both, our experienced team will guide you on a journey that’s as immersive as it is unforgettable.

    Highlights:

    Level of difficulty

    Moderate (Hiking)
We curated this experience for people who enjoy trekking. You should be in good physical condition. The walking trails are a mixture of dirt tracks and well-constructed stone mule paths. Hikes and treks includes occasional steep ascents. Along the coast, we walk on the sand for some stretches — a good walking pole may be useful.

Easy-moderate hikes, ranging from 2 to 4 hours. This a good start for a first trekking holiday.

*If you don’t want to hike, you can just hang out on the boat or enjoy the warm Aegean waters.

    Sailing
No sailing experience necessary. Those who are already familiar boating are more than welcome to assist our certified skipper throughout the journey. This trip is also a great opportunity for people with no experience to learn the fundamental principles of the art of sailing. Participants must be able to swim to join this tour.

    Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Lefkada - Welcome to the Ionian Islands

Welcome to Lefkada, an island that was once tethered to the mainland by a chain and a legend. In antiquity, it was believed to be the island of Calypso, the nymph who seduced Odysseus. Today, Lefkada is a vibrant blend of Venetian architecture, earthquake-shaped resilience, and Ionian color palettes.
After checking in at Lefkada Marina, enjoy a relaxed sunset walk along the Agia Mavra Lagoon, where salt flats and freshwater mix, creating a unique bird sanctuary.
In the evening, dine in the old town with its colorful wooden houses, cobbled streets, and strong sense of community. (B,L,D)

    Overnight: Lefkada Marina (onboard)
    Sailing: None
    Hiking: 3-4 km, ~1 hour (easy/flat)

    Day 2Sail to Meganissi

Sail past Skorpios (we’ll stop here on our way back), once owned by shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, and glide into the island life of Meganissi (2 hrs), where time slows under olive branches and stone alleyways.
Hike between Spartochori and Vathi (7 km / 2.5 hrs) along shaded paths once used by farmers and fishermen. Discover abandoned windmills, cisterns, and viewports looking toward Ithaca and the mainland mountains.
In the afternoon, visit a family-run estate for a local wine tasting, learning how ancient techniques are blended with modern passion. Swim and snorkel in a hidden cove that once sheltered Allied submarines during WWII. (B,L,D)

    Overnight: Vathi, Meganissi (harbor anchorage)
    Sailing: 15 NM / ~2 hrs
    Hiking: 7 km / 2.5 hrs, moderate

Day 3Kalamos - Monastic Heights & Ghost Villages

Sail to Kalamos (2.5 hrs), a green mountain rising from the sea. This island, home to less than 500 residents, is a sanctuary of pines and solitude.
Hike through a forgotten village (Kefali) to Agios Donatos Monastery (8 km / 3 hrs), where panoramic views and old stone ruins tell of a past shaped by pirates, monks, and earthquake migrations. You’ll find terraced hillsides that once sustained the entire island with grains, grapes, and olives.
Dine at a rustic seaside tavern under the stars, with the hum of cicadas and waves in place of background music. (B,L,D)

    Overnight: Kalamos Harbor
    Sailing: 12 NM / ~2.5 hrs
    Hiking: 8 km / 3 hrs, moderate

Day 4Kastos - Windmills, Sea Caves & Home Cooking Class

A short sail brings you to Kastos (1.5 hrs), a gem known for its pre-industrial quietude and scenic stone trails.
Hike a circular path around the island (6 km / 2 hrs), visiting the Agios Emilianos chapel, ancient sea caves once used by pirates, and hilltop windmills that once ground the grain for the entire Ionian chain.
In the afternoon, join a cooking class with a local family who will guide you through traditional Ionian recipes passed down through generations. Dishes like bourdeto, stuffed vegetables, and sweet mandolato connect you to a culinary heritage rooted in land and sea. (B,L,D)

    Overnight: Kastos Harbor
    Sailing: 8 NM / ~1.5 hrs
    Hiking: 6 km / 2 hrs, easy-moderate

    Day 5Ithaca - Odysseus’ Island

Set sail to Ithaca (3.5–4 hrs), a name that resonates with epic longing. It’s here that Odysseus returned after a 10-year war and a 10-year odyssey—a land tied to poetry, perseverance, and homecoming.
Swim in Atokos Island’s One House Bay, a private islet that feels mythic in its solitude.
On land, hike from Stavros to the School of Homer (7 km / 2.5 hrs), visiting ruins where scholars believe Odysseus once ruled. The landscape is rugged, olive-strewn, and charged with story. Stop for a homemade fig and raki tasting in a local village.
In the evening, enjoy a wine tasting at a boutique vineyard, where local varietals like Robola and Tsaousi are paired with Ionian cheeses. (B,L,D)

    Overnight: Frikes or Kioni, Ithaca
Sailing: 20 NM, includes swim stops / ~4 hrs
    Hiking: 7 km / 2.5 hrs, moderate

    Day 6Highland Ithaca Hike

Today’s hike (10 km / 4.5 hrs) is a ridge route from Anogi, one of the oldest settlements, down to Exogi, passing the otherworldly Roussano rock formations, ancient waymarkers, and the Byzantine church of Panagia.
Visit Kathara Monastery, perched high with commanding views over the Ionian—legend says Odysseus himself looked out from this height before descending to his beloved Ithaca.
Lunch in a mountain taverna, where slow-roasted lamb, hand-cut fries, and lemony greens await. Return to the boat for a swim and rest. (B,L,D)

    Overnight: Frikes or Kioni, Ithaca
    Sailing: None
    Hiking: 10 km / 4.5 hrs, moderate-challenging

Day 7Sail to Lefkada - Stop at Scorpios

Sail gently back to Lefkada (4 hrs), stopping for a final swim off Skorpios or Desimi Bay, where poetry meets luxury—Skorpios was once home to Jackie O and Maria Callas, icons of a bygone era.
Upon arrival, hike to the Faneromeni Monastery (3 km / 1 hr), Lefkada’s spiritual center. With panoramic views of the western Ionian and stories of miracle-working monks, it’s the perfect place to reflect on your journey.
Enjoy a farewell dinner of meze and wine, share stories, and toast to the sea, the land, and the myth that lives in both. (B,L,D)

    Overnight: Lefkada Marina (onboard)
Sailing: 22 NM, with swim stops / ~4 hrs
Hiking: 3 km, ~1 hour, easy

    Day 8Departure Day

Savor one last Greek coffee on deck. Take a morning stroll, dip, or visit the local market before your departure. (B)

And if you don’t want to end your Greece journey here, consider continuing inland to explore the dramatic stone villages of Zagori or the awe-inspiring monasteries of Meteora—where towering peaks, ancient paths, and timeless spirituality offer a perfect complement to your island adventure.

    Recommended Gear

Greece enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with warm sunny days and occasional cool breezes, especially on the islands or at higher elevations. The best approach to packing is to use the layering system—this allows you to easily adjust to changing temperatures. If it gets hot, you can remove layers; if it turns windy or cooler, you can quickly layer up for comfort.

Travel light, travel smart. The less you carry, the easier your journey will be—especially when navigating ferry ports, cobblestone streets, or compact sailboats. Minimalist packing isn’t just convenient at the start; you’ll thank yourself at the end of the trip, too.

Here’s a list of recommended items to bring on your Ionian Sail & Hike Odyssey:

    What to bring

    • Day pack to carry camera, water bottle and snacks etc.
    • Waterproof rain jacket / Windbreaker
    • Casual clothing made of light-weight fabrics
    • Long-sleeve shirt
    • Hiking pants, loose and easy to move in and quick-drying hiking shorts
    • Swimsuit
    • Sun hat or baseball cap
    • Casual, comfortable shoes for evening
    • Sunscreen and lip protection
    • Sunglasses and retainer strap
    • Electrical adapter plug/converter
    • Soft duffel bag or lightweight rolling suitcase (ideal for boat storage)

*This packing list is meant to serve as a flexible guideline, not a strict checklist. Feel free to adapt it based on your personal preferences, travel style, and the specific activities you have planned. Add what you need, skip what you don’t—the goal is to pack smart and travel comfortably.
